BMO Capital Markets hardware analysts Keith Bachman and Ambrish Srivastava this afternoon offer an update on what to expect from Q1 results for the personal computer market.

Their observation of notebook shipments in the quarter suggests results more or less in line with their view for a deeper-than-seasonal decline by notebook computer makers of 21%, versus the three-year average decline of 14%, while desktops are just a slight bit weaker.

“We believe 1Q builds ended up mostly in line with our forecast. Builds for notebooks were in line with our estimate while those for motherboards were slightly below our expectations owing to lower February shipments.”

The duo see a snapback in notebook shipments in Q2: “Our very early read for 2Q15 is the following: we expect a 15% q-q unit increase for notebooks, above the three year seasonality of +6%; for motherboards, we expect flat q-q unit performance.

The authors leave unchanged their forecast for PC units to be down 5% in Q1 and down 6% for the full year.

Bachman and Srivastava believe research firm IDC will report its forecast for Q1 PC units this Thursday.
